Living With My Demons

A poem on fear.

It’s like snakeskin coming off
Gingerly. Hesitantly. Painfully.
I am peeling myself
Layer by layer

I am naked
Crying
Here I am

An avalanche of
Fears, memories, voices
Drowning me
Crushing me

Destroying the path I have so delicately built
Telling me that this is not for me
That I can’t do this

Demons flutter around my shoulders
Circling like vultures
Assessing their prey

Feelings. Visions. Words.
Flood
Drip
Trickle and seep through the cracks that remain
In my brain

The pains buried so deep
Half decomposed
Rear their ugly heads
Hoping for one last whirl

Snow melts
Sun peers through
Pools and puddles reflect the light of day

I will always have demons
There will always be half-dead stories, fears and pain
Chasing me
Stalking me

I must let them flutter
I must look ahead
I must not veer
For I have come too far

I cannot destroy my own peace
And only I have that power

I am strong
I am fierce
I deserve to be Here. Now.

That is all that matters
