3 Tips to network properly in an event

We all attend events, at times, especially when going to an event without early notice, they do feel like a waste of time. however, you can generate real value if you approach them in the right way.

I have put together 3 main points that I feel will help you make the best of the next event: 1. Write down your goals for the event

If you know what you want to achieve at the event, you will have a better chance of reaching these goals. For example, are you there to find investors? maybe you are seeking strategic partners, technology vendors or perhaps customers. You have to know what you are looking to achieve.

2. Preparation, preparation, preparation

Most events have a list of attendees or at least a list of keynote speakers. The nest thing you can do is pre-scheduled meetings with relevant people prior to the event. If this is not possible, then learn the faces of a handful of key people you wish to seek out, so that you will be able to spot them in a crowd.

2.1 Be open and spontaneous

Not to contradict my previous point, keep yourself open and available to meet with people spontaneously, when waiting for coffee or if someone starts speaking with you. Hear them out the same way you would want to be heard. These might be the best meetings you will have that day. This is how I met some of my best partners and employees.

3. Interact properly

You know your goal, for example, to speak with investors about your current Seed Round. You know whom you want to meet — a specific Partner in an active fund that is relevant to your industry and stage. You successfully spot the person. Before approaching them, make sure they are available. If they are busy, do not interrupt their conversation, this shows a lack of respect for them and the person they are meeting with. Interrupting the investor will create a very bad first impression which will not benefit your fundraising efforts. If they are available, introduce yourself. Do not start with “My name is John and I am raising $2M to create a next-generation cyber solution”. This is not a good start. They know nothing about you and the phrase is a generic turn off. I suggest that you start with a personal introduction to who you are, as a person, which will lead to why you created your startup and what is the problem you are solving. If they seem interested, you can continue with your short pitch. This will not be a full 30 min pitch, only a few minutes long. The end game should be to get them interested enough to ask you to come for a meeting. If this is not relevant to them, they will likely say so, if it is relevant but it is simply not a good time to speak then ask for a business card, send a followup email thanking them for their time, attach your investor one pager (ideally made with VCforU) or deck and aim to schedule a meeting with them.
