What is the best way to read programming books?

Must read

How to read correctly, so as not to forget what you read at the beginning of the chapter and the interest in this book did not disappear

Higher mathematics is often exclusively a theory. Programming is in most cases a practice.

Books on technologies (programming languages, web-development, creation of mobile applications) are filled with practical examples and tasks, and therefore you need to thoroughly “allowed to fold”: this is the only way the material will settle correctly in your head.

Rule №1: Practice makes perfect! You should try the examples described in the book immediately, in the process of reading. You can also complicate them yourself, come up with your own tasks using the material just learned. This is a good practice for lack of a teacher or tutor.

Rule №2: Re-read! Books on programming are simply designed for this, especially if a specific technology or programming language is new to you, and there is no experience with them. The first time you understand all the information in the book will not work. After the first reading and some practice, return to the theoretical study of the material covered again.

Rule №3: Five books are no better than one. The pursuit of quantity in the hope of clogging your closet with “smart” books will not lead to anything. When learning new things, it can be hard to force yourself to move on to practice. To remain in the comfort zone, we often console ourselves with the fact that we know little, and fall into a trap called the “Eternal Student” — a person who constantly teaches something, but actually does nothing with his knowledge.

Do not drive yourself into a dead end with questions in the style of “I read Mark Lutz’s book about Python. What to read next? ”. Better answer the question“ How many lines of code did you write during the reading? ”. Reread the book and try to put something into practice from it.

So, finally, DO NOT chase quantity. For starters, one course, one book, one tutorial, one video lesson is enough to write the first lines of code. Without these lines, the price of the next thick book is worthless.

Welcome to programming world!
