The Bizarre Disappearance of Luke Stout

*Information is obtained from the ‘Where are they?’ Podcast and other online sources as cited**

Luke Stout was a 24-year-old young man, who loved video games, comic books, skateboarding, and most of all, his family.

Luke lived in Buckhanon, West Virginia, where he grew up with 3 older brothers. He was also very close to his mother, Elizabeth, with who he remained living with so he could care for her. Elizabeth was terminally ill and relied on her boys to help her.

On the morning of July 18, 2012, Luke took his broken green bicycle and walked down the driveway. He was taking it to his friend’s house, where they were going to fix it up. This friend, Dylan, said he was sending someone over to pick Luke up, and Luke should meet them at the end of his driveway.

Luke’s mother and brother watched Luke walk down the driveway and out of sight.

Luke Stout was never seen or heard from again.

Luke was born on July 6, 1988. He was the youngest of 4 boys- 4 brothers that his mom often referred to as the ‘four musketeers’.

Luke was always a very selfless kid, wanting to help his mom or his friends, and always thinking of others.

At age 16, he got a job and began working in an effort to help his mom out financially. That’s a pretty admirable character trait for a young man and because of his help, the family was able to stay in their home and have food on the table.

Luke’s family lived in Buckhannon, West Virginia. Buckhannon is in Upshur County and sits along the Buckhannon River. It’s a small town- with just over 5,000 residents, and is home to the West Virginia Wesleyan College.

Buckhannon consists of less than 3 square miles and sits at the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains. You can imagine, like most of West Virginia, the area is very rural, and is surrounded by forests, rivers, mountains, and undeveloped land.

It is a known area for mining- and is also home to the 2006 Sago Mine Disaster. On January 2, 2006, lightning struck the mine, igniting the coal and causing a massive explosion. 12 people lost their lives and there was just one survivor.
