Buying Things at Full Price

Why I am no longer buying items at a discount or paying-over-time.

I am no longer going to buy things either at a discount or make payments spread out over a certain amount of time. Not only will this restrict me from spending so much, since I am paying full price for everything. I am also not diminishing the value of something by only paying a fraction of what it costs over a long period.

I am currently on the iPhone Upgrade Program for my iPhone and just recently bought a new wireless mouse for my MacBook Pro just because it was on sale. These are only two of many examples of how I have been purchasing things for years now.

My goal is to no longer follow these paths of purchasing things. I plan to pay off my current iPhone, avoiding the upgrade available to the iPhone 11 Pro, and I am also going to no longer buy something on Amazon because it is on sale. Especially when the item is not something I needed in the first place.

What happens when we follow these ways of buying things is that it perpetuates the “always-buying-something” mentality. For minimalists, stopping this habit is one of the biggest things that can create relief since you are no longer in the mindset of always feeling like you need more. Once you realize you have enough, regardless of what could be added to your worldly possessions, it is very freeing.

Another thing that I think this helps is allowing the value of the item to persist even after you own it. A brand new laptop is very desirable, especially at a price tag of $1,000 to $2,000. Once you pick out your dream laptop for $1,500, you also agree to a 12-month interest-free credit card that costs you $125 a month.

At first, you love the laptop, but after about six months of owning it while continuing to make payments, you start to feel the $125 a month isn’t necessarily worth what it was initially. A new model of the same laptop may have just been released with a new design or new technology features that make you feel your laptop is now obsolete and no longer as desirable.

Buying the laptop with cash for $1,500 or less may not have stopped the feeling of your laptop feeling old after six months. But it may have made you feel a little less bad since you…
