Walker Buehler makes the complete game fashionable again

(Katie Chin/Los Angeles Dodgers)

by Cary Osborne

Way back in Arizona during the first days of Spring Training, Walker Buehler stood in front of his locker and spoke about his goals for the coming season.

Highest on his list was going deep into games and reaching 200 innings. The great pitchers in the game, he reasoned, check off those two boxes.

With two months left in the season, 200 innings might be a tough goal to reach. But Buehler is putting a big red checkmark on the other box.

On Saturday, the right-hander struck out 15 San Diego Padres en route to his second complete game of the season, leading the Dodgers to a 4–1 victory. The Dodgers haven’t had a pitcher reach at least two complete games since Clayton Kershaw in 2016. Heck, they didn’t even have a complete game in all of 2018.

“It’s big. For me it signifies being efficient and doing my job on pitch count and things like that,” Buehler said of the significance of the complete game. “I kind of learned how to do a little bit of that when I was on a pitch count here early in my career. And luckily I’ve been more efficient than years past.”

Buehler threw a complete game on June 21 at Dodger Stadium against the Rockies. He struck out 16 batters, walked none and allowed two runs. He threw 111 pitches.

On Saturday, he walked none again, allowed five hits and one run — a pinch-hit home run by Manuel Margot in the top of the eighth inning. He threw 110 pitches.

His last pitch was a 3–2 cutter that struck out Eric Hosmer to end the game.

“He was getting ahead all night long. He had his way with a good lineup over there,” said manager Dave Roberts. “I know he came…
