Be Selfish

Selfishness may not be as evil as it’s been made out to be. the term “evil” itself is mostly very subjective. But that’s a topic for another day.

Selfishness is the basis of human race’s most basic of instincts — survival instinct — self preservation.

Even religions — institutions that are at the forefront of vilifying ‘selfishness’ rely on it to be and remain relevant.

Think on it — who wants to go to heaven, to have/be given 72 virgins or even go to Valhalla for anyone else? Isn’t the promise of eternal afterlife bliss and the corresponding threat/scare of eternal punishment/damnation really about the self?

Why then vilify selfishness? Shouldn’t we espouse it and harness it for the benefit of the individual and the human race? If the happiness of the one you love makes you happy, isn’t it in your best interest to make them happy? Which is really a “selfish” act.

If conserving the environment ensures the longevity of the planet and by association a good future for ‘your’ children, it’s in your best interest to conserve the environment. A ‘selfish’ act.

Selfishness isn’t ‘evil’ .. selflessness, however, has been the cause of so much suffering — even glorifying it, oppression, and a clear contradiction of the survival instinct that has brought the human race this far.

This issue is NOT as simplistic as I have presented it here. It touches on so much philosophical and theological aspects that I may not be qualified to speak on.

Be selfish .. love self first. Put self first .. no one else will .. it’s a lovely thing when (true) love for self makes for an outpouring of love for others — which really is to your benefit if the well-being of all around you is taken care of.
