Why I Moved From Slack to WhatsApp

Slack is fantastic. The feature of slack I find amusing is the ‘live’ emojis. Very unlike the emojis I’m used to seeing.

One feature of Slack which I have found very useful is being able to chat with myself. I use it to rant about all the things I can’t in real life.

Uhm, yeah, not exactly. It makes it easier to save links and pieces of text(or all of them). And also move these from my PC to my phone (And vice versa).

BUT…

Slack has drawbacks:

Message not found?

When using a free workspace, old messages get deleted when the workspace is full as new messages are entering.
So if your saved stuff is older than all the messages in #random, your messages will get deleted before those in random.

Load Time

Slack takes a longer time to load than WhatsApp(most times).

Stressful ‘Sharing’

I have multiple slack workspaces(9, with 3 useful ones), and sharing links are a pain in the arm.

If I need to copy links from other apps, (using a share feature), I have to first select a workspace to share to, and then search for myself in the channel list. Too stressful.

If I need to copy a link from another Slack workspace, I have to copy the message, move to my preferred workspace and then paste. But I can’t share directly to another workspace. So I might need to save the links in your private space in the concerned workspace(pun alert?). Or copy’n’paste it in my most preferred workspace. Nah. Too stressful.

If I have to copy the text/link, I might as well take it to another app.

If I use WhatsApp, I can share to WhatsApp and pick ONE destination, and voila, done.

But how do I store stuff on WhatsApp? WhatsApp has no private spaces!

Make one!

Create a WhatsApp group (yeah, you get to be a group admin, right?).

To create one you have to add at least one person. So pick a random person on your contacts list. If you have two WhatsApp numbers, your other number will do.

After creating the group, you are free to kick the other contact out the window.

Your “cloud” storage is ready!

Lest I forget, don’t store media. They’ll disappear. Unless you use GDrive backup.

This has been a better experience for me. I use WhatsApp Web so my saved stuff is ubiquitous. At least, till Mark Zuckerberg gets angry at my storage dumping and decides to become ‘slack’-y.
