Simple should be easier

Some people seem to thrive on complexity and making things confusing but most people agree that simpler is better. I see lots of talk about simplifying, minimalism, essentialism and Occam’s Razor…

Denver Crime Data Exploration

This blog is a data exploration on a Denver Crime dataset I came across on Kaggle. It provides me very interesting insights on offense occurrences in Denver, USA.

After reviewing some basics of the dataset, here are a few questions I investigated:

Question 1: What are the most common offense categories in Denver?

Among all crimes and traffic accidents in Denver, there are 15 offense categories in total: all-other-crimes’, ‘larceny’, ‘theft-from-motor-vehicle’, ‘traffic-accident’, ‘drug-alcohol’, ‘auto-theft’, ‘white-collar-crime’, ‘burglary’, ‘public-disorder’, ‘aggravated-assault’, ‘other-crimes-against-persons’, ‘robbery’, ‘sexual-assault’, ‘murder’, ‘arson’.

After data exploration, it can be inferred that the most common offense category in Denver is traffic-accident, there are over 120000 traffic accidents happened since 2014.

What’s following, all-other-crimes are the second common offense category in Denver. Let’s take a closer look at this category.

In “all other crimes” category, there are 69 offense types in total. From the two plots above, we can see that the top three most common offense types are: criminal-trespassing, public-order-crimes-other, traf-habitual-other; and the bottom three offense types are: explosive-posses, money-laudering, eavesdropping.

Question 2: What are the distribution of offense occurred over time?

Since the offense occurrence timestamp information is available in the dataset, I would like to see how the distribution of offense occurrences looks like per month/hour.

From the plots above, we can see May, June and July are the month with most offense occurrences.

During a day, it seems most crimes happened at night time, and most traffic accidents happened during day time.

Question 3: What are the crime occurrence trend for difference crime categories?

The next exploration part is about how the crime occurrence changes over time since 2016 in Denver. The following plots are the crime occurrence trend for difference offense categories.

From above plot, it can be inferred that aggravated-assault, auto-theft, sexual-assault, theft-from-motor-vehicle have an increasing tendency; and burglary, public-disorder have a decreasing tendency; other offense categories fluctuate over time.

Question 4: What is the average occurrence of crimes on each day in a year?

From the dataset, another interesting fact we can look into is how many offense cases on average on each day through a year.

In the plot above, the average number of offense cases happened on each day can be visualized clearly. The lighter the color of a block is, the more offense cases happened on that day. From the plot, we can see that, since 2016, the cumulative offense case on most days through a year are more than 150, and it seems in summer and fall, more offense cases happened.

Question 5: What is the average occurrence of crimes on each day in a year?

In the dataset, geographical information is available as well, the following exploration part is based on that information.

By calculating the number of crimes in each neighborhood, we can select the most dangerous neighborhoods and the safest neighborhoods in Denver.

Referring to the above two plots, the most dangerous neighborhood in Denver is Five points, in which more than 20000 crimes happened in the past 5 years. And Wellshire is the safest area with less than 500 crimes happened.
