Five Barriers to creating a Nigerian Success Story

So one of my team members asked me a question today. ’Why do you think Nigeria can’t create a viral app like WhatsApp or Baidu, something that can scale with our 200 million people?’

So I thought about it for a few minutes, and gave him five reasons. These would probably tally with a few other thoughts I have read from other Nigerians on the matter, but ultimately I think it boils down to these five reasons. Here they are, outlined in simple language (sorry, writing prose isn’t my forte!), and also ranked by level of difficulty. Number 1 is in my view, the easiest barrier to cross, and number 5 is the most difficult. So here we go:

So, there you have it. It’s not that we cannot do it. For me, there are simply too few of us tackling these five problems up there, and there are too many of us chasing the Fantasy of the Bourgeoise. This is the real challenge before the Nigerian Middle class.
